Masculinity – 12 men tell their stories through a one off performance (The Power of Performance Part 2)

Thursday 25th January

This month the Theatre Royal’s Creative Matters programme is focussed on Men’s Mental Health.  As part of this series of plays, films and talks MensCraft are leading two events:

Power of Performance Part 1 &  2.
Part 1 saw professionals and likeminded people from East Anglia get together and discuss the importance and value of using the arts and theatre to combat men’s mental ill-health with a specific focus on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. See Roger Kingerlee’s excellent presentation

Part 2 is taking place on the 25th January at 8pm. This event has been created by Andy Wood (MensCraft director) and Thomas Bailey a Theatre Director working with a group of 12 men. Over the course of January the group have been meeting up, recalling stories and sharing past experiences with the aim of creating a theatrical performance for the public. The theme they have been working on is ‘Masculinity’ and how men are influenced and shaped by cultural norms and the effect that this has on well-being. The culmination of these rehearsals will be a performance based on the foundation of their own experiences.

When you come to the event you can expect to leave with a greater understanding of how traditional preconceptions of ‘masculinity’ can impact men’s mental health in a negative way; but also of how the use of theatre can help men to combat this, and channel energy into positive activities. On Thursday night the audience is also a part of the process for the men taking part – sharing their stories to people that they may or may not know is an important aspect of their involvement in this scheme.  Please be prepared to stay after the performance to give your feedback in the Q & A session.

The show starts at 8 pm and the whole event (performance and Q & A) will finish by 9.45.

Tickets in advance from the Theatre Royal Box office are £5 (£2.50 concessions)
